SA: Mentally ill asylum seeker granted temporary visa

A mentally ill teenage asylum seeker has been granted a temporary protection visa bythe federal government.

QADER FEDAYEE, aged 18, has been the subject of a court battle between South Australia'spublic advocate and the Immigration Department.

Mr FEDAYEE, suffering severe post traumatic stress, has been staying under guard ata suburban Adelaide holiday unit since his release from a psychiatric hospital on Monday.

The Immigration Department attempted to return Mr FEDAYEE to detention last week butwas blocked when public advocate John HARLEY, WHOSE role is to protect the interests ofpeople with a mental disability, took the issue to court.

The South Australian Supreme Court on Monday ordered an injunction preventing the ImmigrationDepartment from returning Mr FEDAYEE to detention.

Today, the court's been told Fedayee has been granted a temporary protection visa bythe government.

Mr HARLEY says Mr FEDAYEE can now stay in the community and receive further treatmentand support.
